Celebrating the works of Michael Donaghy
Join Oxford Professor of Poetry, A.E. Stallings, for the inaugural meeting in her 'We are the Dead Poets Appreciation Society' series, honouring Michael Donaghy.
Michael Donaghy (May 24, 1954 – September 16, 2004) was a US poet and musician of Irish parentage from New York City, who lived in London from 1985, bridging the US and UK poetry worlds. He was a member of the London poetry workshop, founded by the Belfast poet Robert Graecen, and received the Whitbread and Forward, among other prizes. His sudden death at the age of 50 in 2004 left promise unfulfilled, but also a body of extraordinary work, each poem both unique in its strategies, yet recognizable as a Donaghy poem.
In this casual poetry evening and celebration, friends, fans, and new readers of Donaghy will read one of his poems, or a poem responding to it, and say a few words about it. Anyone is welcome to sign up – or to come along and listen.
The event will be followed by a reception and discussion, with the possibility of some Irish music. Organised with the Oxford Professor of Poetry, A. E. Stallings and Lady Margaret Hall.
