Applications

Who can apply for an LMH Summer Programme?

LMH Summer Programmes are designed for students who want to gain and develop knowledge in their chosen subject area. Unless specifically stated in the course outline, there are no formal prerequisites or restrictions regarding which subject(s) you are currently studying at university, but please note that LMH Summer Programmes are intensive courses of study aimed at undergraduates who have completed one or two years of their degree, or entry level postgraduate students.

All participants must have completed at least their first year of undergraduate study by the time of their LMH Summer Programme, meaning that school students or school-leavers who are looking ahead to university are not eligible to apply.

We will consider each applicant’s academic ability and expect successful applicants to have a minimum grade point average equivalent to 2:1 level on the British grading scale. For example, this would mean at least a 3.2 GPA on the 4.0 grading scale in the United States, and 80% in China.

To participate fully in the programme all students will need to have proficiency in English. Students who are not either native English speakers or taught in English at their home university must demonstrate their English proficiency. To check the demonstration of English proficiency we accept please see our admission criteria. If you have proof of English language proficiency which is not listed above, but which you would like us to consider, please contact vacation.programmes@lmh.ox.ac.uk.

How should my application be submitted?

To submit your application for an LMH Summer Programme, you need to complete the online form and send your up-to date, or most recent, academic transcript and (if applicable) evidence of English language proficiency to vacation.programmes@lmh.ox.ac.uk. Please note, we will not be able to process your application until we have received your supporting documents.

What if I am a first-year undergraduate student and do not yet have a transcript?

We will consider each applicant’s academic record and expect successful applicants to have a minimum grade point average equivalent to a British ‘2:1’. If you are a first-year undergraduate student and do not yet have a transcript, please contact us at vacation.programmes@lmh.ox.ac.uk to discuss alternative ways in which you may be able to provide evidence of your academic attainment.

Is there an application deadline?

The application deadline for the 2024 LMH Summer Programmes is 10th May 2024. Competition for places is high, however, and many courses fill up far in advance of the deadline so we recommend applying as early as possible.

How soon will I hear from you after submitting my application?

Applications are processed and offers are made on a rolling basis; we will provide a decision on your application within a maximum of two weeks. If you are offered a place on the programme, you must secure your place by paying a 25% Programme Fee Deposit and returning a signed Enrolment Agreement within two weeks.

Arrival and Departure

Do I need a visa to attend a residential programme?

You can check the British Government’s guide to find out whether you will need a visa (please select your nationality, “study”, and “less than 6 months”). Upon securing your place you will be issued a Study Visitor Letter which provides information in support of your entry to the UK as a visitor and which you can include with your visitor visa application.

Staying at Lady Margaret Hall

Where will I stay?

You will stay in College accommodation within the grounds of Lady Margaret Hall, in single en-suite bedrooms normally occupied by our undergraduate students during term time. The accommodation is all within a minute or two’s walk from the Common Room, Dining Hall, and Lecture Theatre.

What are the catering arrangements?

You will have breakfast each day in the Dining Hall, and lunch and dinner will be provided in College Monday to Friday. You will also have a welcome dinner provided on Sunday evening at the start of your course, and on the final Friday evening of each 3-week course you will have a ‘Formal Hall’ a special banquet for which students dress up in the finest outfits.

Academics

Will I be assessed and graded on an LMH Summer Programme?

Yes, on each three-week course students produce one piece of assessed work every week, which is submitted to the tutor and then discussed in a tutorial. At the end of each week, you will receive a percentage grade for your submitted work. Each week’s work counts for a third of your final percentage grade, so your final grade is an average of the mark received for each piece of work.

Is it possible to earn academic credit on an LMH Summer Programme?

Many students have successfully earned academic credit by studying on an LMH Summer Programme. Lady Margaret Hall will provide a transcript of your assessed work, and can send this directly to your home institution if requested. LMH Summer Programmes are designed to be eligible for academic credit, and we will communicate with your home institution to facilitate this as needed. As a guide, we recommend the award of 15 CATS / 7.5 ECTS / 4 US Credits for each 3-week course. Lady Margaret Hall does not itself award academic credit, however, and ultimately it will be decision of your home institution whether to recognise the study you undertake on an LMH Summer Programme.

When will I know the results and receive a transcript and certificate?

Your tutor will provide you with feedback on your assessed work and an indication of your grades during your Friday tutorials. Within two weeks of the end of your course you will receive a Transcript of Academic Results and confirmation of your final grade, and a digital copy of your Programme Certificate.
