LMH alumna Sukhneel Jaspal (2019, PPE) has recently been devoting her time to volunteering for Care4Calais, a charity that extends support to refugee communities in Northern France, the UK, and Belgium.
Embracing an intensive schedule working seven days a week from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm, Sukhneel has been stationed for some of the time at the Care4Calais warehouse in Calais, contributing to the assembly of emergency packages comprising food, clothing, tents, and sleeping bags. Sukhneel and her fellow volunteers then ensure the efficient distribution of these essential packages among the refugee community in Calais and the surrounding areas, meeting some of their most pressing needs.
As well as supporting the logistics of Care4Calais’s work, Sukhneel has been collaborating with other members of the Care4Calais team to engage with residents of refugee settlement sites and provide a mixture of practical and social support. This can range from conducting craft sessions and organising simple recreational games to facilitating haircuts and bike repairs, offering some much-needed respite for individuals enduring challenging circumstances.
Originally planning to dedicate two weeks to this volunteer role, Sukhneel has decided to extend her stay in France, committing to at least another six weeks of active support for Care4Calais. During this time, she will be fundraising to support the future work of Care4Calais, leveraging community support to help provide more essential resources and aid the charity’s ongoing efforts.
