In this letter dated July 9th 1943, the ARP (blackout) wardens are not too happy with the student stirrup water pump team not remembering to inform them when they go out on duty.

Student war work played an important part in college life during both world wars. Student J.H Kirkwood recalls her work with the water pump:

“The Trailer Pump was a great feature. LMH shared one with Wycliffe and St. Stephen’s- colleges which buried their vastly different traditions in the common cause. Ours was a Coventry Climax Godiva. Her unifying influence also led to the discovery that dons were human too.”
