Overview

This three-year course provides the opportunity to study history from the Ancient Mediterranean World, through the middle ages and the early-modern period, right up to British, European and world history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

History (Ancient and Modern) at LMH

LMH has a very strong tradition in Ancient and Modern History (AMH) since its inception. It offers a very friendly and supportive environment, in which AMH students can flourish and develop their special interests. The College has an excellently equipped library and subject-based social events are organised on a regular basis to bring together tutors, lecturers, undergraduates and graduates with historical interests at LMH.

What our students say

When I applied to Oxford, I knew little about what I could expect of the University apart from its world renowned quality of education. Coming from Sweden, I had hardly heard anything about the different ‘colleges’ that constitute the University until I encountered them on the UCAS application form. But after I had been accepted and had come here to study, I realised how fortunate I was to have come to LMH.

The College does a remarkable job in combining responsible tutoring and great academic results with an informal and friendly atmosphere. I learnt so much about both my subject and myself since I came here, and I made life-long friendships. The close proximity of LMH to the University Parks and LMH’s wonderful gardens by the river place the College in an environment which is unlike any of the other colleges in the centre of town, and I was also very grateful to our College library, which is open 24 hours a day and has an extensive collection in ancient and classical studies.

As an international student, I appreciated the warm welcome LMH gave me and the open mindedness of my tutors and fellow students. I learned a lot about the English culture and all other cultures that were represented in this highly international college. I can strongly recommend LMH to all students, domestic and international, who are interested in top quality education and in having three fantastic years at university.
