Dates and Subjects

Modern Languages and Linguistics - Wednesday 22nd April

Year 12 students from state schools and colleges across the UK are invited to join us for our Modern Languages and Linguistics Taster Day on Wednesday 22nd April.

Our Modern Languages and Linguistics Taster Day gives students the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of our undergraduate degree programmes. LMH tutors will offer a series of taster workshops focusing on French literature and Spanish cinema, alongside introductory sessions to Portuguese, Russian and the study of Linguistics. These tasters will give an indication of the variety of areas and approaches that make up a Modern Languages course, which extends across literature, language, film, history, culture, and thought, and of the wide range of skills our students hone through their in-depth study.

The day will include a discussion of the Modern Languages and Linguistics application process at Oxford, a mock interview, and a Q&A with tutors and current undergraduate students in Modern Languages. All attendees will also have a tour of LMH with one of our student ambassadors and a free lunch in the college hall.

We welcome any Year 12 student from a UK state school who has a keen interest in languages and linguistics, who is studying at least one language (French, German, Spanish) at A-level, and is considering studying modern languages at university. No prior knowledge of a specific language or of linguistics is required in order to attend a taster session on that topic.

How to Apply

Applications for the 2025 Taster Day Series are now closed.

Selection Criteria

Our Taster Days are designed to be most useful for students from state schools in the UK who have the potential to make a competitive application to the University of Oxford. In order to ensure that we are providing the opportunity to students who will benefit the most from the experience, we will consider GCSE results and predicted grades in the selection process.

We strongly encourage students to apply who are studying at a UK state school and achieved a high proportion of 7, 8 and 9 grades in their GCSEs.

We suggest that applicants research the entry requirements for their chosen course, as we will be comparing these to predicted grades during the decision-making process. In general, these are A*A*A/A*AA for science subjects and AAA for arts and humanities subjects (AA/AAB in Advanced Highers).

If the events are oversubscribed, we will also consider the contextual data of the applicants using similar categories to those used in the Oxford admissions process. We may also prioritise students from our link regions.

Students are welcome to apply for more than one of our Taster Days. Please bear in mind that, if our Taster Days are oversubscribed, each student will only be offered a place for one subject, so please state your preference on the application form.
