Role: Fellow and Tutor; Associate Professor in Ancient History

Prof Christina Kuhn

Biography

I am Associate Professor in Ancient History at the Classics Faculty and Tutor and Fellow in Ancient History at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. Before joining LMH, I was a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg and a Research Associate at the Oxford Classics Faculty. I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research interests

My research is centred on the history of the Roman Empire in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and involves the study of Latin and Greek epigraphy, Roman imperial historiography (Tacitus, Cassius Dio), and the authors of the Second Sophistic, especially Dio Chrysostom and Aelius Aristides. I am particularly interested in the history of political institutions and the development of political discourse both at Rome and in the Greek cities of Roman Asia Minor. I have published widely in these fields, including The Julio-Claudian Principate: Tradition and Transition (ed., 2025) and Politische Kommunikation und öffentliche Meinung in der antiken Welt (ed., 2012). I also serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Epigraphic Studies

Teaching

At LMH, I teach a wide range of options in Roman History and organize all undergraduate teaching relating to Ancient History for LMH students on the courses of Literae Humaniores (LitHum), Ancient and Modern History (AMH), and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History (CAAH). In my faculty role, I supervise graduate students on the MSt, MPhil and DPhil in Ancient History and give lectures and faculty classes in Roman imperial history and Latin epigraphy.
