New Boat Donation Gives LMHBC a Welcome Boost

LMH Boat Club has received a new donated Eight, ‘The Faraday’, from Alumni James and Elisabeth Lindsay, giving the club a practical boost as it continues to invest in training, equipment and crew development.

Named ‘The Faraday’, the brand new Eight has been donated to LMHBC courtesy of James Lindsay (1992, Engineering Science) and Elisabeth Lindsay (1992, Modern Languages).

It is the latest in a series of donations from alumni and friends of LMHBC, with other gifts this year helping the Boat Club travel for a training camp in Seville and subsidise costs, making the sport more accessible to studentsOnce again, this highlights how donor generosity can help fund equipment, coaching and wider access across the club.

Mark Seal, College Boatman, said the donation would make a real difference to the Boat Club.

“Rowing is an expensive sport, with the purchasing of boats way beyond the means of a boat club, so having a donor purchase this is a huge boost to the club.”

This donation also has a personal connection to LMH. Both Elisabeth and James Lindsay rowed early in Mark Seal’s tenure as College Boatman in the early 1990s, and the new boat marks a continuing link between former and current members of the College boat club community.

The arrival of The Faraday comes as Oxford approaches 50 years since women first started rowing at the University, with LMH women among the earliest to take part. Mark Seal said it would be lovely to think the College “could find a way of celebrating this with a new boat for W1.”

The Faraday will now join the club’s fleet and support future training and racing for the M1 team.
