The Recognition of Distinction exercise is held annually and awards the title of Professor to academics who have demonstrated a sustained contribution to the University’s work in teaching, research, and service to the University or wider community.
Professor Koenigsmann, a member of the Oxford Mathematical Logic Group at the University’s Mathematical Institute, joined LMH in 2007 from the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics. He is very active in the life of the College, founding the termly LMH Maths Seminars in 2008, which provide a forum for mathematicians of all levels to meet and share ideas. He also contributes to musical life at LMH with his regular violin recitals.
Professor Koenigsmann's research focuses on logic, algebra, and number theory, and has addressed a wide range of topics including valuation theory, model theory, the arithmetic of fields, infinite Galois theory, the Inverse Galois Problem, Hilbert’s 10th Problem, undecidability in number theory, Grothendieck’s anabelian geometry, and profinite groups. In 2018, he was invited as a speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians which, in mathematics, is the equivalent of an induction to a hall of fame.
This award is a formal acknowledgement of his contributions as a researcher, teacher, and member of the academic community at Oxford.
