The Paul McClean Prize for Journalism was established in memory of Paul McClean (2011, French), who passed in September 2017 after graduating with a first-class degree. At the time, he was beginning his career as a journalist on the Financial Times graduate trainee programme. During his time at LMH, Paul was deeply involved in student journalism, including serving as deputy editor of Cherwell.

This year's prize was judged by alumni Merlin Fulcher (2005, History), a journalist at The Architect's Journal. Merlin said: "Jude’s journalism is brave and insightful, blending informed analysis with clear factual reporting. His submissions for this year’s prize were fascinating to read. His article ‘Who really matters in politics?’ for The Oxford Student offers a particularly cogent, clear and compelling investigation into the complex political dimensions of intergenerational justice. Jude clearly has a bright career ahead of him in journalism and I hope his powerful writing serves both as a reminder of Paul McClean’s own achievements and an inspiration to many others."

Reflecting on the award, Jude said: "I am incredibly proud to receive the Paul McClean Journalism prize this year; it has given me a newfound confidence in my journalistic ability and encourages me to continue pursuing this as a career in future"

Looking ahead, Jude plans to use the prize to support future opportunities: "There are several different opportunities I might use the prize for, potentially for costs related to internships in the summer or on my year abroad next year. I am excited to continue writing for student newspapers until then, getting involved in as many ways as I can with student journalism."

The College extends its thanks to this year’s judges for their time and expertise, and to all those who have contributed to the Paul McClean Prize fund, helping to sustain Paul’s journalistic legacy at LMH.
