LMH Fellow and Tutor in Law, Professor Helen Scott, has been appointed Regius Professor of Civil Law at the University of Cambridge following approval from the Queen. Professor Scott joined LMH in 2017 and has served as Professor of Private Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.

Helen has been interested in Roman law since she first studied it as a second-year undergraduate at the University of Cape Town in 1994. Five years later she was taught advanced Roman law by David Ibbetson (current Regius Professor at Cambridge) and Peter Birks (former Regius Professor at Oxford) when she came to Oxford to do the Bachelor of Civil Law. She has been teaching and writing about Roman law ever since. First as a tutorial fellow at Trinity College and St Catherines College in Oxford, then as a member of the Department of Private Law at the University of Cape Town and most recently at LMH.

Professor Scott said of her appointment: "I am of course delighted and honoured to be following David Ibbetson as Regius Professor of Civil Law at Cambridge. I look forward hugely to taking up the Chair, and to working with my new colleagues to build Civil law at Cambridge and beyond.

"I have hugely enjoyed my (almost) five years at LMH and will be very sorry to leave my colleagues and students here. I hope to visit often!"
