The second LMH Summer Lecture will feature speaker Professor Alan Barr, Professor of Particle Physics and Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. Professor Barr has been involved in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN since 1999, when that experiment was still in the research and development phase.
'The Edge of Science': What we know (and what we’d like to know) about the universe we live in
More than 350 years after Robert Hooke discovered a previously unknown world under his microscope, Oxford scientists are now probing the basic constituents of the universe with unprecedented precision. Our equivalent instruments today are not traditional microscopes, but powerful particle accelerators, such as the Large Hadron Collider, located near Geneva. By interpreting the debris from these high-energy collisions, we have found new types of matter, and explored the fundamental forces of nature which govern them. Our hope is that we might also create particles not yet observed on earth - but which we believe makes up most of content of the Universe.
All members of the LMH community are warmly invited to come along to this lecture, which is part of an ongoing series throughout the summer.
