Goodwin Liu is a Justice of the California Supreme Court. He was sworn into office in 2011 and retained by the electorate in 2014 and 2022. Before joining the court, he was Professor of Law and Associate Dean at UC Berkeley School of Law. His areas of expertise include constitutional law, education law and policy, and diversity in the legal profession. He continues to teach constitutional law at Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia law schools.
Robust exercises of executive power by the current Presidential administration in the US have spawned many controversies over separation of powers and due process of law. Those controversies are the subject of scores of lawsuits, testing the role of the judiciary in enforcing constitutional limits.
Justice Liu will discuss the role of the courts in these turbulent times - in particular, how the judiciary can perform effectively in the face of difficult political constraints and threats, as well as the important role that non-legal factors - including institutional norms and civic activism - must play in safeguarding the rule of law.
Justice Liu's talk will be followed by Q&A and a drinks reception.
