What do you enjoy the most about LMH?
The community that you get to integrate yourself into. There are so many different people with different backgrounds and being together (in a really nice space) really is something. Plus, with so many others doing my course in LMH, there is always someone who can lend an ear for cool mathematical discussion, especially among different year levels.
What has studying at Oxford been like so far?
Demanding, of course, but very rewarding. The volume of material that I can access, either in the Bodleian Libraries, or directly in our own library, is kind of crazy, and there is so much to explore across the whole university. I’ve met many really close friends on a whim through societies (like RPGSoc or JL:OX.)
What do you enjoy most about your course?
Studying Maths and Computer Science comes down to mastering new ways of thinking and a kind of creativity that you really don’t get to experience anywhere else. It rewires your brain and makes you think much more deeply about the ideas that underpin things that are often taken for granted. It’s a special kind of perspective that most people never get to experience. Plus, doing fun, occasionally silly, frequently crazy maths with like-minded people is great.
What’s your best advice for a prospective applicant?
Ensure that you do truly enjoy doing and learning about mathematics and the rigour that comes with it. You will need to in order to be successful with this kind of course, as there will be long periods where you will simply have to sit with something, banging your head against the wall until something clicks and it all comes into focus. Not for everything, but certainly some things. The same is true for Computer Science (often even moreso), and I think it is a different kind of Computer Science than many people expect (so do some reading and see if it is suited for you).
