This meeting’s Dead Poet: Homer!
Sad for the Odyssey Summer to end? Please come to read/recite or listen to poems about or responding to Homer’s work, the Iliad or the Odyssey, its events and characters. Sign up to read or recite (or intone) poems in any language (including Homer in ancient Greek) that engage with Homer or the Homeric poems—there are wonderful modern and contemporary examples from Michael Longley, Seamus Heaney, Alice Oswald, Anne Carson, Wallace Stevens, Dorothy Parker, H.D., and any number of others. (An original poem can be read if a poem by someone else is read first.)
Henry Power, Lord White Fellow in English at St Peter’s College, and author of Homer Haunted, about contemporary poets and Homer, will give a brief talk/introduction to the event. A.E. Stallings, the current Professor of Poetry, will emcee. A wine reception will follow.
