Mr Alexander Hughes

Alex is a DPhil candidate at the Faculty of Law, supervised by Dr Shreya Atrey and generously funded by a Judge Meron Graduate Scholarship (Trinity College and Faculty of Law).

Alex is a Graduate Resident at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and co-convenes the Bonavero Graduate Research Forum.

Alex was previously the Judicial Assistant to Lord Sales at the UK Supreme Court and then the Head Judicial Assistant to the President, Lord Reed. Before that he worked at the European Court of Human Rights, first in the Office of the President and then as a Lawyer in the UK Division. Alex is a qualified solicitor (non-practising) and worked for several years at Latham & Watkins in London.

Alex conducts research in human rights law, feminist legal theory, criminal law, and public law. His doctoral research explores the relationship between sexual violence and women’s expression. Beyond his DPhil, his current research focuses in particular on how gender-based violence is addressed under the European Convention on Human Rights.

At LMH Alex teaches Tort Law. He also teaches Criminal Law and Tort Law at St Edmund Hall and Trinity College. He has previously taught Contract Law at Harris Manchester College and Criminal Law at King’s College London.
