Dr Tom McAuliffe

I read History at St Peter's College before doing an MSt in Medieval History at St Hugh's, and then moving to Wolfson College as a doctoral researcher supported by a Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarship in the Humanities. I finished my DPhil in 2026, and was also a Lecturer in Medieval History at Brasenose College from 2023 to 2025.

I am a historian of the British Isles in the early and central medieval period, and I am particularly interested in the interplay of government, literacy, lordship, and power. I wrote my doctoral thesis about how Domesday Book was used by English kings after 1086 for a variety of purposes; I am now working on my first book, provisionally titled 'After Domesday: Intelligible Power in Conquered England, 1086–1135'. I am also working on a second project which aims to contextualise the political and social upheavals of the eleventh century within the global climate, making use of recent advances in palaeoclimatology and astrophysics.
