Professor Xon de Ros delivered the closing keynote at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid as scholars marked 100 years since the founding of the Lyceum Club Femenino.
LMH Emeritus Fellow Professor Xon de Ros gave the closing keynote at a symposium in Madrid on 2 July 2026, held at the Museo Reina Sofía, to mark the centenary of the Lyceum Club Femenino. The day brought together lectures, round tables, artistic interventions and a closing concert, all focused on the club’s place in the cultural and feminist history of early twentieth-century Spain.
Founded in Madrid in 1926, the Lyceum Club Femenino created new opportunities for women’s participation in intellectual, artistic and public life. A franchise of the London club by the same name, the Lyceum offers an interesting insight into transnational women’s movements and feminism in the 20th century. The centenary event explored the club’s role as a pioneering institution and examined the wider networks and ideas around women, modernity and culture that shaped its legacy in the Spanish Silver Age.
Xon de Ros’s keynote, Figures of the new: women and modernity in twentieth-century Spanish culture, was the final academic contribution to the programme.
Professor de Ros said: “The inclusion in the symposium of music, dance, and song as well as academic contributions was a fitting celebration of the creative vitality of the Lyceum Club Femenino (1926–1937).”
The symposium also reflected the continuing interest in the Lyceum’s wider significance, both as a historical institution and as part of the broader story of women’s cultural and intellectual activity in Spain.
