LMH alumnus Professor Peter Thonemann (1997, Literae Humaniores) has been elected as a Fellow of the British Academy, the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences.
This year, the Academy has elected 58 new UK-based Fellows in recognition of their outstanding contributions to research in their fields. Professor Thonemann’s election reflects his sustained work in ancient history, with particular expertise in the history of Asia Minor (modern Turkey).
Professor Thonemann read Literae Humaniores as an undergraduate at LMH before completing his DPhil as a Prize Fellow at All Souls College. Since 2007, he has been Forrest-Derow Fellow and Tutor in Ancient History at Wadham College.
His research focuses on the history and epigraphy of Asia Minor in antiquity. Professor Thonemann’s most recent book was a study of village life in a remote upland region of inland Asia Minor (The Lives of Ancient Villages: Rural Society in Roman Anatolia, 2022. He is currently preparing a new Loeb edition of the works of Lucian of Samosata, due in 2026.
Professor Thonemann is a former editor of the Journal of Roman Studies and now serves as editor of the Routledge History of the Ancient World. He is also a member of the Academia Europaea (elected in 2016) and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (2024).
