We are pleased to offer visiting students tutorials in French and Spanish. There is a long and rich tradition of Modern Languages study in LMH. As one of the largest subjects in college, our library holdings are considerable.
Range of courses
Study of the 19th-century French Novel. This includes a fortnightly seminar to discuss critical essays on the Realist novel, as well as 3 or 4 tutorials from the following topics: the Romantic confessional novel (Chateaubriand, Constant, Claire de Duras); Balzac; Flaubert and Sand; Zola and the Goncourt Brothers.

Study of 20th- and 21st French and francophone literature. We run a small fortnightly seminar to discuss critical essays on important debates in the period (from Surrealism and Existentialism to the Nouveau roman and feminist theory), alongside 3 or 4 tutorials on a very wide range of topics on texts from the period, including modern theatre, autobiography, experimental writing, literature and History, and touching on questions of gender, class and ethnicity.
In addition to the above, a class in Translation from French literary texts into English is available each term.
Other options proposed by students may be offered in consultation with the French tutor.
Spanish Literature of the 20th century – particularly the poetry of Antonio Machado, Federico Garcia Lorca and other poets of the 1927 group; women’s writing; modernism and avant-garde.
Other options suggested by students will be considered, but will need to be agreed with our Spanish tutors in advance.
