Oxford is a challenging and exhilarating place to study. The students admitted to LMH have proven that they posses a great amount of academic ability, but that does not mean they arrive with all of the skills they will need to make the most of their time here. The jump between secondary education and reading for a degree is a large one, and the intensive nature of the short Oxford terms can mean that some students encounter difficulties keeping pace.

LMH has established The Oxford Study Skills Centre at LMH, the first of its kind in Oxford, in order to help students get the most out of their time here. The Centre is run by LMH alumna Dr Margaret Coombe (History and Modern Languages, 1971) who has a wealth of experience in guiding students through the challenges they encounter during their course. She offers group and 1:1 sessions aimed at improving essential study skills like:

  • Structuring arguments
  • Writing academic essays
  • Managing time
  • Using academic resources

By improving these skills, students can better focus on the academic requirements of their course, avoid or manage stress at busy times of the term, and generally improve their results.

Support the Study Skills Centre

The Centre is open to all LMH students who need guidance on how to study more effectively. Thanks to a donation of £100,000, we only have another £20,000 still to raise to see the Centre through its first three years.

Your support would be a vital contribution to this new academic resource.

You can make a regular gift to provide a steady source of income for the future, or a single gift to help us get the new Centre established. Please contact Sarah Jones in the Development Office with any questions.

I don't know if you have access to student exam results, but in the event that you don't I should tell you I got a first (and a prize). I couldn't have considered it, let alone achieve it, without the study skills lessons so please know that you have the deepest thanks I am capable of giving.
