Dr Goicoechea joined LMH in 2006 as a Tutorial Fellow and University Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry. Prior to his arrival at LMH he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana; 2003–2006) under the supervision of Professor Slavi Sevov.
Dr Goicoechea completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Zaragoza in his home country of Spain before relocating to the U.K. to study for a Ph.D. at the University of Bath (2000-2003). At Bath he worked under the supervision of Professor Mike Whittlesey on the synthesis and reactivity of water-soluble ruthenium (II) phosphine complexes and developed a passion for chemical synthesis.
Teaching
Dr Goicoechea is a tutor in Inorganic Chemistry. At the departmental level he teaches:
- Acids, Bases and Solution Equilibria: A first year undergraduate lecture course on the solution reactivity of inorganic compounds (acid-base theory, electrochemistry, etc.).
- Symmetry II: A second year undergraduate lecture course covering basic group theory and its chemical applications to fields such as electronic and vibrational spectroscopy.
Between 2007 and 2009, he delivered a course on the descriptive chemistry of the p-block elements (periodic trends, reactivity, compounds of interest, etc.) to the second year.
Dr Goicoechea is on leave for the 2012–2013 Academic Year.
Research interests:
The Goicoechea group is based in the Chemistry Research Laboratory of the University of Oxford. Current research is centred on the synthesis of novel molecular species of the main-group and transition metal elements with a particular focus on species with uncharacteristically low oxidation states and those that pose difficult fundamental questions about molecular structure and bonding. The ultimate aim of this research is to design molecules derived from abundant and environmentally compatible elements for the stoichiometric and catalytic activation of small molecules.
Further information about research in the Goicoechea group can be found at its departmental webpage.
Read Dr Goicoechea's article in the College's Annual Report 2011 (page 10).
