Dr Michael Broers awarded Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship

14 July 2011

Dr Michael Broers has been awarded a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship for academic years 2011-2013 for his project ‘Napoleonic civilization: a regime and its agendas’.

The aim of this project is to examine the great common themes of Napoleonic rule, and its legacies for Europe. Nothing like it has ever been attempted before, and the research will combine unprecedented geographic and archival breadth with a new conceptual approach to understanding the Napoleonic era in European history. It will bring both depth and breadth to our understanding of key public institutions – the law, the Church, the police – and their reception in western Europe. This broad-ranging and immensely ambitious study of seminal foundations will ask how these were laid, and how well, or poorly, they became established.

The award brings the total number of current and recent prestigious research grants among LMH History Tutors to three:  Dr George Garnett held a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship 2008-2010; in addition to his Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship, Dr Broers also holds a British Academy Small Research Grant.

Professor Richard Jenkyns is another recent holder of a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship (2007-2010). Dr Phil Biggin was also awarded research project grant from the Leverhulme Trust in March 2011.
