LMHer succeeds at first women’s rackets varsity match
13 March 2017
LMH student Eve Shenkman (French and Spanish) tells us about her successful participation in this year’s rackets varsity.
This year marked the first ever women's rackets varsity match which took place at the Queen's club in London on the 1
of February. Rackets has traditionally been a male-dominated sport and it is only in the past 7 years that the women's game has come into being. Women's rackets is growing, and the 2017 varsity match, sponsored by Pol Roger, marks an important step in encouraging female participation in the sport. My partner and I, Georgie Willis (first year studying Classics at St Hugh’s) beat Cambridge 3-0.
The real tennis varsity match was at the Marylebone Cricket Club in London on the 23
to the 25
of February. It was a great event, with many alumni and members coming to watch. Oxford women stormed to a 6-0 victory, with all women winning their respective doubles and singles matches.
The 2nd team women's squash varsity was held at Cambridge this year on the 4
of March. Cambridge put up a good fight, and although I lost playing at number 1 for the team, we won overall 3-2. It was a great celebration of the diverse squash talent which often goes unnoticed at Oxford!
